What is Spiritual Abuse?

Spiritual abuse is the mistreatment of a person in the name of God, faith, religion, or church at the expense of their spiritual well being.

It includes various forms of control, domination or manipulation by someone or a group who has authority within a spiritual setting.

Just as other forms of abuse are extremely damaging, be it, emotional, sexual, psychological, physical, etc, spiritual abuse is extremely damaging to our spirit.

What is different about spiritual abuse?

It is a very serious, however greatly misunderstood form of abuse, as it encompasses other forms of abuse, similar to the ones quoted above. What makes it different is the context within which the abuse occurs. It can seriously damage our relationship with God and distort the way that we perceive Him. Depending on the denomination it may also be termed as clergy / pastoral / priest / minister abuse.
